SMALL SIZE AND WEIGHT
AND RATE MODES
HPI model REM 500 is a small lightweight Neutron Survey Meter. It
eliminates the need for a large heavy moderator by measuring the
neutrons with a Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC) combined
with a 256 channel multichannel analyzer. The instrument applies
the appropriate ICRU/P quality factors to each neutron event which
results in a true REM response.
The REM 500 has all the convenience of a microprocessor based instrument
including an alphanumeric display, softkeys, and front panel calibration.
It is an easy to use instrument with on screen menus directing the
user to the various functions. The display autoranges through a
full 7 decades on both RADs and REMs. It has both a rate and integrate
mode. The integrate range also displays the integration time in
A built in optional check source verifies correct operation and
detector calibration. The detector is sealed; this design has been
used in the field for over 10 years.
The aluminum case is rugged and gasketed. Battery access is through
a cover on the end of the case. The Battery life is 100 hours on
6 C cells.
The REM 500 Neutron Survey Meter is the ideal instrument to measure
neutrons both in the lab or in the field.

Alphanumeric 2 line x 16 character LCD. Rate range displays radiation
level, counts and log bargraph. Integrate range displays radiation
level, time in HH:MM:SS, and counts.
Autoranging from .001 mREM/h to 100 REM/h and .001 mRAD/h to 100
Slow, Fast and Infinite. Infinite is rate calculated from special
integrated dose and time.
Range: Autoranging from .001 mREM to 999 REM and .001 mRAD to 999
RAD. Integrate range is operational when displaying rate range.
For valid statistics on rate range: 1 mREM/h to 100 Rem/h and 1
mRAD/h to 10 RAD/h (Depends on average QF of radiation).
Warm Up Time:
100 hours; 6 ea alkaline C cells. Low battery indicator in display.
~480 counts/mRem, ~4800 counts/mRad.
Derivation: Smoothed data from ICRU 19 QF table and ICRP 60 table.
Response: 70 KeV to 20 MeV.
Less than 1% at 1 RAD/h
Banging on the instrument will make it respond.
Dependence: Less than ± 15 % from 15 to 45°C
Response: Less than 10 % change from 0 to 95 % RH non condensing.
Optional Internal Source
optional Internal Cm244 source requires radioactive materials license.
